Same-sex marriage in Alagoas
Same-sex marriage is legal in Alagoas (Brazil).〔(Brazil’s most populous state to allow same-sex marriage )〕〔(Brazil’s São Paolo extends the freedom to marry to same-sex couples )〕 On 6 January 2012, a judge in Alagoas ruled that same-sex marriages will be performed in the state instead of the civil unions, making it the first state in Brazil to grant married status to same-sex couples.
On 17 January 2012, a male couple who had lived together for almost 25 years became the second married same-sex couple in the state, and the first since the new ruling. Earlier, a lesbian couple had been able to have their civil union converted to marriage.〔 (Alagoas registra seu segundo casamento gay )〕
